Fukuro Shinai is a training tool made of finely split bamboo tips placed in a sheath made of deerskin.
It is said to have been invented by Kamiizumi Ise no Kami Nobutsuna, the founder of the Shinkage-ryu school.
Before the Fukuro Shinai, wooden swords and bladed swords were used in training, which caused many injuries.
However, the invention of the Fukuro Shinai greatly improved safety during training.
450 years have passed since this tool was invented, but in Shinkage-ryu dojos, Fukuro Shinai are still used in almost the same form as they were back then.
In modern times, science has advanced and new materials are appearing one after another, but still, no material to replace bamboo has been found.
Bamboo grows quickly, is easy to process, and has excellent elasticity and shock absorption, making it an ideal material for Fukuro Shinai.
